Tension and Relief

It’s a little funny how pain and discomfort sometimes inspire someone to move when otherwise they would remain complacent.

Case in point: I recently established care with a local chiropractor. It’s not that I haven’t been to see someone before. I just haven’t gone regularly with a plan to improve some of my aches and pains. I tend to go once a year or so when I can’t stand the tension in my back any longer!

In part, I haven’t wanted to take time off work during the day. Plus, some practitioners require their patients to come more often than I wanted. (To make healthy habits stick, I’m all about convenience!)

Health is not something I take for granted, but often I defer self-care because of so many other things calling for my attention. I’m trying to be better about that!

So, a few weeks ago, I received a flyer in the mail about a husband-and-wife team opening their practice a few minutes away. I had never seen a woman chiropractor before, and I was also intrigued because they are basically one street over from where we live (check). Still, I didn’t think I was in that. much. pain. 

Really, I have grown used to my neck hurting for about twenty years! In college, I carried so many heavy books back and forth to campus. Even back then, when Dave and I were dating, I couldn’t turn my head past a certain point to look at him when we were traveling in his truck. I was often stressed and felt too busy to get checked out.

And, if you have read my book, Fear, Faith, and Moving Forward, you will know that we were involved in a fender-bender (hit from behind) when Dave was sick. As a caregiver for him and Lydia, I didn’t take any time to get checked out after my skull had slammed my headrest. It took about two weeks to feel like me again (still tense, but less pain).

Thankfully, I have been working to regain my health and sense of wellbeing for the last few years. Yoga, stretching, massages, and stress management have helped over time, in addition to getting new bedding and pillows, and several other random gadgets all promising relief. But, those don’t help mechanical issues if your back is out of alignment!

So, I finally called to schedule an appointment. And, happily, they offered evening appointments on certain nights (check). I was eager to go and see what could be done.

Last Monday, I went to my appointment, and I was surprised at how understanding ‘my’ chiropractor is. She has young children, so she knows the stresses moms face. She listened to my story, concerns, and burdens as a single mom and homeowner. She knew what I meant when I mentioned pain from shoveling snow and carrying out household duties, for example.

She was easy to talk with (check) and explained her philosophy of not over-treating (check). She adjusted my hips, lower back, mid/upper back, and neck. All four areas were out of whack. Then, she gave me exercises to stay in alignment (very cool… check).

Immediately, I noticed improved mobility in my hips and less pain in my neck and shoulders. I was able to move in ways I had completely forgotten about, such as doing push-ups without feeling awkward! I also had only a minor headache for a few hours one day, instead of a string of them. I had no idea that was possible. Thank You, Jesus!

I went back a week later, and two of the four places still needed help, but my hips and neck were more stable. There has been a little pain, but it is manageable. I think my body has been out of whack for so long, it is getting used to a new normal (the original intent!).

I have one more planned appointment, and then we will see how it goes. I am hopeful I can maintain this level and only go when I really need it. Though, I understand now that regular care is better than once-a-year care! Either way, I am glad to now have someone on board to call when I have a flare-up. 

Of course, chiropractic care cannot fix every source of pain. It takes time to see progress for chronic problems. But, I am grateful for one more tool to use. This whole experience has improved my quality of life! I am even sitting straighter and walking with more fluid motion!

Interestingly, God tends to teach us through physical pain and painful circumstances. I am (still) learning it’s okay to ask for help, and it’s okay to admit weakness. In those moments, God draws us close and gives us His strength. He is my healer, and I’m grateful I don’t have to fight my way through life. Instead, I can relax knowing He’s got my back and will help me through the tension!

Finding Grace #293

You may have seen the acronym GRACE as God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Grace is also God’s unmerited favor, or God doing for us what we cannot.

I find grace overflowing with God’s love, joy, peace, blessings, mercy, power, provision, protection, and wisdom. Thank You, Jesus!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a solid week, full of God’s grace! I had Monday off from work (Columbus Day), and I spent it catching up around the house. Then, I had some friends from church over in the evening. It was a much-needed fun and relaxing day!

Tuesday was quite busy at work and at home. I changed my work hours slightly to accommodate a later patient. Thankfully, I was able to squeeze in a quick appointment beforehand. But, the rest of the day kept me on my toes.

After I picked up Lydia, we ran to the grocery store. Thus, we arrived home about an hour and a half later than normal. That’s when I realized I wore blue jeans instead of my usual dress pants to work! Thankfully, no one else noticed either, including my boss! (I told her and some of my coworkers the next day; we all laughed and agreed it was probably due to stress!) Whew!

My mom’s birthday was yesterday. It was a special birthday (number-wise), and I enjoyed chatting with her after work. It was great to have her all to myself! I am grateful I get off early on Fridays. 🙂

Today, I spent some time exercising in the morning and later went shopping for some new fall and winter decor! It’s fun to get new things from time to time. Lydia was invited to a friend’s house for a playdate, so it was nice to have a few hours to myself on such a beautiful, sunny autumnal day!

There’s grace in every situation—we just need to look for it. God promises if we seek Him, we will find Him (see Jeremiah 29:13)!

This week was really good! On Sunday night, I was preparing for the week ahead, which included meals, dishes, and laundry. Lydia was watching the Olympics and asked for an after-dinner snack. I hadn’t eaten my meal yet and was a little short with her. She offered me an emoji stress ball that she uses when she is “stretched.” Her misinterpretation was cute and a good reminder not to take myself so seriously.

This week, I went to two movies in the theater! Lydia and I went with a friend to see ‘Peter Rabbit’ on Sunday afternoon. Then, on Monday, I went to see ‘The Greatest Showman.’ Both were good in their own ways. I don’t see too many movies in the theater, but was glad it worked out!

This week I had a great conversation with a dear friend in Illinois. All week we’ve been comparing notes about various events at the Olympics. One night, I called her to catch up with her and spent some time listening and encouraging her. I was encouraged too!

Today, another dear friend watched Lydia for me while I had a meeting. They went to cheerleading and out to lunch. I was grateful for her help! Tonight we plan to watch a movie at home…and/or the Olympics. 😉

It has been a beautiful sunny day for us! I have noticed the mornings are getting brighter and the sun is staying up longer. God is so good!

Got Stress? Get Grace!

As I looked for a good tie-in to today’s post, I immediately loved this acronym:

S.T.R.E.S.S. = Still Trying to Run the Entire Solar System

Now, I could tell you all the reasons why my week was stressful. This would include a conference, a deadline, tech difficulties, and a cranky child. I’m sure you understand.

Yet, they might just be good excuses. We all know Life happens. It’s easy to complain.

I could also offer advice on how I met these challenges. I’d share how I took a nap, took a walk…and took some chocolate. I’d recommend arranging for childcare, using a crockpot for easy meals, and rescheduling certain activities for another time. All good things!

(I’ll leave out the perfectionism and procrastination part…I’m sure that wasn’t related.) 😉

But you see, in my tiny little solar system, it can’t be all about me, what I want or know. I can’t even decide what to have for breakfast…so I am totally inadequate to run the show.

So I’ll keep trusting in God, the Creator of the Universe. He is excellent at dealing with stressful events. And, He is an ever-present Help in time of need!

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?

My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—
He who watches over you will not slumber.”

Let’s take a moment to clarify and renew our minds with God’s word. We can overlook important details or connections when we feel overwhelmed.

Isaiah 26:3 says, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you.” If you don’t have peace, try realigning your focus.

Often we get stressed because we feel responsible for end-results—as if success depends on us. It is useless to depend on our own fleeting energy instead of God’s everlasting strength.

If God started something good in you, He will be faithful to complete it (see Philippians 1:6).

Both perfectionism and procrastination can yield stress. But the root is fear. In the chaos of our emotions, we can lose sight of the vision and purpose God has given us.

So, remind yourself of God’s constant love. We don’t have to be afraid!

Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

God blesses obedience, and He has equipped us to do what He has called us to do (see Ephesians 2:10). If we’re trying to do more than that, it’s no wonder we are stressed.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).

Lord God, I praise you! You spoke out Your Word, and created the heavens and the earth. Nothing is too difficult for you! You do all things well. When I am overwhelmed, help me seek You first. I want to do it Your way. Give me wisdom to know what to do, and the courage to do it. Thank You for Your abundant grace. In Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
