Finding Grace #387

You may have seen the acronym GRACE as God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Grace is also God’s unmerited favor, or God doing for us what we cannot.

I find grace overflowing with God’s love, joy, peace, blessings, mercy, power, provision, protection, and wisdom. Thank You, Jesus!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week went well!

My lawn mower wasn’t working on Sunday. Through a little reading and tinkering, I realized it likely was the carburetor. My neighbor offered to take it in for a tune-up, which was so kind. I called and set it up, and he transported it back and forth. In the meantime, he let me borrow his mower, which was a big help!

We celebrated someone’s birthday at work, which gave us a chance to laugh and connect. I also had a lot of interesting patients, including the one from last week. He seems stable but had some issues with his tube feeding regimen. I worked behind the scenes with the pharmacy since we don’t carry the formula he needed. Thankfully, it all worked out!

On Wednesday, I dropped Lydia off at our church youth group and then went to pick some veggies from a friend’s garden. She was out of town and didn’t want them to go to waste. I picked a zucchini, a few tomatoes, and some peppers. On the way back to get Lydia, I saw two fields of sunflowers, which called my name. I pulled off to get a few pictures, and as I was sitting there, a couple of men drove by. A minute later, one returned to check on me. I appreciated him and did not feel threatened since he never got out of his vehicle. Thanks, Lord!

For Wednesday’s post, I wrote about how friendships are sometimes complicated as we age. They just take more effort because there are more factors involved. Many of my good friends have moved away, so it can be hard to keep putting myself out there when people might leave. Thankfully, Jesus always draws me closer. Furthermore, I aim to be a light wherever God leads me, so I won’t hide away even though that would be easier! 🙂

Today, we stayed home and mostly relaxed. I woke up early, lifted weights, and walked through the neighborhood. It was overcast and I saw some pretty cattails (pic above). Later, I made some fried green tomatoes with my friends’ garden produce! I just added a tiny bit of oil and some Maldon sea salt flakes. So good!

Now, we are enjoying a good thunderstorm. My lawn really needs the water, so I am thrilled. The downpouring rain on my windows means it’s a perfect night for a movie and some popcorn with Lydia!

There’s grace in every situation—we just need to look for it. God promises if we seek Him, we will find Him (see Jeremiah 29:13)!

Finding Grace #321

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a rainy week full of God’s grace!

I was playing catch-up all week at work; it was just busy! I saw a lot of patients, which is nothing unusual. But, I was crunched for time when it came to charting. I did my best, and I am satisfied with that!

On Monday afternoon, we went to the dentist, and each of us received a good report! Also, we had another chiropractic adjustment on Thursday. The chiropractor is impressed with how well we are doing. That means we can spread out the sessions even further!

I was able to connect with several friends and family via text throughout the week. It was good to encourage them and cheer them on in some of the trials they are facing.

Today, we spent a couple of hours helping a widow clean out her garage. It can be a burden to go through all the ‘stuff’ after someone dies; there are so many decisions to make! I had some friends help me go through things when Dave died, so I was glad to pass on the blessing. It was good for Lydia to use her muscles and serve as well! It was rainy, and we came home wet but happy.

Deluge

This week and next, Lydia is taking swimming lessons. I have enjoyed having time to catch up with a couple of mom friends while our kids are swimming.

We’ve been getting done with the lessons around 5:15 pm. We take the highway from the Minnesota side back to North Dakota. Traffic can be heavy at that time.

On the way home Monday, I saw an ambulance. I prayed right away for safety and healing for whoever needed the ambulance—and wisdom for all the medical professionals.

Then, the thought occurred to me that my friend, who was driving ahead of me, probably prayed too. Perhaps many people were praying for that one ambulance as it sped by.

Then, last night, as we drove home, it started storming. We made it to the car just before the rain hit. As we listened to the radio, a tornado warning was announced for a community about an hour away.

I prayed again, for God’s mercy, that the storm would subside. I’m sure others did too.

We made it home just before it started pouring…cats, dogs, buckets, you name it! A few minutes later, part of my yard and bike path were flooded.

Thankfully, the water quickly receded into the drain at the corner of my lot. And, my sump pump probably helped too. All of this makes me think how rich in mercy God is. He pours out a deluge, really!

Put simply, mercy is when we don’t get what we deserve.

As it rained on and off, I was reminded how we receive God’s mercy because Jesus took the punishment for sin (death) for us. He diverted the penalty away from us. Thank You, Lord!

A little while later, Lydia and I saw a faint rainbow after the storm had passed. What grace!

Put simply, grace is when we get what we don’t deserve.

Water can be life-giving and fun… or dangerous and unpredictable. Sometimes we can splash in the puddles and sometimes we need to take cover.

This life brings both calm and chaos, and we will certainly have some wild days. But God is constant. Sometimes He calms the storm, and other times, He calms us instead.

He God floods us with His tender, loving care. His showers us with mercy and grace.

He is quick to help and quick to come to our defense. He protects us even when we are unaware of the danger. He is mighty to save!

Last night, as the blue sky finally peeked through the clouds, I was reminded no matter what storms may come, God is always with us. His love knows no bounds.

Finding Grace #63

I love giving God a shout out for what He has done.
We don’t do that nearly enough!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?

I’m not sure there are enough words (or space!) to describe this week. It was really sweet to see how everything worked out, by God’s grace. It started with Mother’s Day on Sunday, which combined the 4th anniversary of Dave’s death on Monday, always makes me aware of the void in our lives…of all he is missing. However, both days went well. We had lunch on Sunday with a friend and an impromptu ice cream celebration on Monday with more friends. I felt God’s love all around me and many people checked in with me. Thank you!

Lydia’s last day of preschool was on Wednesday, so we prepared end-of-year gifts for her teachers. All year, Lydia had been asking me to get her main teacher a jar of pickles. (Apparently, she likes them!) So, for the last week of school, I finally agreed. We wrapped up two different kinds of pickles along with a gift card and thank you note for her teacher. Lydia decorated the bag with stickers. I hope she found much humor in it, because Lydia was really excited! (I explained the pickles were from Lydia, specifically…not me!) 😉

On Wednesday evening, we also had an impromptu pancake dinner ‘party’ with the neighbors. After school, I dropped their little boy off and we ended up staying. We were trying to decide what to have for dinner, and I said Lydia had been asking for pancakes all week. I ran home (across the street) for pancake mix, oranges, and my electric skillet. My neighbor supplied bacon and sausage! It was so fun (and delicious!)

On Thursday, a friend watched Lydia while I went to the dentist (no cavities!) and did some writing. I really appreciated her help and felt like I got a lot accomplished. Later, we joined our neighbors again for the Fargo Youth Run (one event of many, during the Fargo Marathon week). We all ran the half mile. Lydia was proud of her cape and “Finisher” medal! I prayed for good weather, as it has been a little cool and windy that day. It was a perfect evening for a run!

I’ve had a dull headache all on-and-off all week, so didn’t do as much as I planned on Friday. Instead, we decided to stay home and rest. Praise God! After a brief afternoon nap, I accomplished a few tasks after all. On a whim, I decided to mow the yard because it may rain for the next few days. I’m glad I didn’t procrastinate!

Today, we shopped for groceries before a gentle rain started. Then, a friend across the street came over to play. I did some reading, made a couple phone calls, and prepped some vegetables for the coming week. After a brief nap, Lydia and I are taking it easy tonight. Maybe we will enjoy a movie while it rains!

Finding Grace #15

I love the concept of giving God a shout out for what He has done.

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?

  • As I reflect on this past week, I can’t help but feel like I am in the exact place I need to be. I am excited to be a part of what God is doing in my life.
  • I found a free online writing summit and of 41 speakers in ten days. I am thankful because it would be very expensive to see this many well-known authors at an actual conference. (Each interview is available for a few days, so I can pace myself.) I have been encouraged and motivated as I listen, and am content feeling like God has designed me a certain way. I have laughed many times when these authors describe many of my own habits and quirks as their own! Praise God!
  • Lydia had a big week this week. She finished her swimming lessons, and I pleased to report that she passed! I’m so proud of her! It was a time-consuming commitment, but so worth it. She also “helped” dig in the dirt and spread mulch when our three trees arrived to be planted. Otherwise, we’ve gotten along better, and Lydia has been catching herself before she loses her temper or starts whining. I am thankful for encouragement from other parents. It helps knowing we’re all in this together!
  • I met a good friend for coffee this week, when she came to Fargo. She and her family moved away last fall, but we have stayed in touch. Her two girls and Lydia always play well together. It was great to catch up with this mom, hold her precious 4-week-old baby boy, and hear what was on her heart.
  • Also, another family who moved away came to visit for a couple days. They moved away a year-and-a-half ago, but were key players in our cancer journey. Lydia spent a lot of time at their house when she was little, often at a moment’s notice. I seriously don’t know where we would be without their friendship and support! Lydia loved playing with their three boys, and I enjoyed catching up with old friends!
  • I have to water my three new trees every day for the first couple weeks. I came out to the garage this morning so Lydia could play, while I wrote today’s post and watered the trees. It looked like it might rain, but not very much. As I finished with the last tree, it started pouring! I quickly raced around the house to put down the gutters, happy because my yard needs the rain! (Lydia ran inside the neighbors’ house when the rain came.) So there I was…alone in my garage… writing this post and enjoying the soothing sounds of the thunderstorm. 🙂
  • After the storm, Lydia came home. We ate lunch before riding our bikes around the neighborhood and enjoying the sunshine…only half-trying to avoid all the puddles!
