Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a special week, and I saw a theme of kindness!

Once again, I was playing catch-up all week at work! I tried to catch up on charting in between patients, but I still had some late notes. I also helped out some of my coworkers and had some fun laughs along the way. We celebrated some birthdays, too! I’m grateful for an awesome team!

I saw kindness and joy all around me by way of greetings in the hallways, thank you notes received, and friends helping each other! I also received some really good news this week. A family, who is in my book and the main reason we came to Fargo, had moved away and is moving back! I am happy to see my friends again after four years, but also grateful for them because they knew Dave personally… always a blessing!

I signed and sold some more books this week and also received some payment for those sold elsewhere online. While I wrote the book without the expectation of ‘royalties,’ I appreciate the little bit of money that comes from selling them and encouraging others!

This week, I went to the doctor for my annual physical. We discussed a few of my questions and came up with a plan of care. I am grateful for a doctor who listens, and all the ways God keeps me healthy or leads me to better health and ways to take care of my body. Prevention is key!

Today, a friend brought her puppy over for a visit. The dog did so well and even took a nap! Then, Lydia attended a birthday party for a friend. It was a good, relaxing day!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a really sweet week! I had some really well-timed conversations and connections with family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. I also noticed the grass greening up and my tulips starting to sprout!

On Easter Sunday, we celebrated at church and helped with an egg hunt there. Then, we spent the afternoon with friends, enjoying a delicious lunch, quality conversation, and fun games. Thank You, Jesus!

Monday evening, I took Lydia and some friends to an activity. It was fun to listen to them talk to each other in the car. You can read more about what I learned here!

Work went well. I had some really nice patients, and I received a great performance review! There are always ways to grow, but I am glad I am on track. Our department also had fun on Look Alike Day (4/20), and one of my friends and I each wore black pants and jean jackets. It was awesome to see my other coworker’s creativity… we had some ‘twins’ and ‘triplets’!

Wednesday night was church. Once again, the conversation was spot-on. This week, we discussed how Mary, the mother of Jesus, must’ve felt. I’m sure it was not as easy as we assume. We got off on our usual tangents, but I really am enjoying hanging out with those ladies!

On Thursday night, Lydia and I caught up on a couple tasks at home. Then, she rode her bike around our house. I just watched her because it was chilly and rainy, but she had a lot of fun!

Friday after work, I took Lydia’s old bike and scooter to a friend’s house. We then chatted for a couple of hours before I ran some errands! We discussed concepts like sickness and grief, salvation and God’s grace. She shared some prayer requests, and it seemed like God’s perfect timing that I reached out. I think we were both encouraged!!

Today, we did a mixture of our usual chores and relaxing! I prepared my snowblower for storage, cleaned some windows, and worked on some continuing education. Lydia cleaned her room and rode her bike in between rain showers. Thankfully, it turned out to be a bright, sunny day in the end!

Friends Indeed

There’s a well-known adage, which says, “A  friend in need is a friend indeed. This week, I was impressed by some childhood friendships, and I want to recap them here!

First, I was helping with the kids’ chapel service at church on Sunday. In part, I sat with the kids during worship in case someone needed help or redirection.

At one point, a young nonverbal girl in a wheelchair was rolled at the end of my aisle. She was close to Lydia’s age. I got up to greet her and learn a little more about her.

Within seconds, a little boy popped over to introduce himself as her cousin. They were approximately the same age. He said, “I know her the best of anyone here. Can I please sit with her and take care of her?”

I was in awe of his compassion and eagerness to look out for his cousin. For the next several minutes, he whispered loving comments to her. He also told me, “I love her so much” and “I have several cousins and I feel it’s my job to look out for them and protect them.” I gently explained how great of a cousin he is, but also that he doesn’t have to shoulder all responsibility for their well-being.

Later, during the egg hunt, I stood with the little girl while her cousin went to find her some Easter eggs. He wanted to make sure she felt included and didn’t miss out! He was so thoughtful and sweet and soon took her for a ride.

Meeting this young boy was refreshing and unexpected. I hope I can be as quick and responsive to meet the needs of those around me.

Hands, Friendship, Friends, Children, Child, Childhood

Second, on Monday, I offered to pick up a couple of Lydia’s friends for an evening athletic activity. It was fun to hear them talking about all sorts of things, such as water bottles and clothing. They were laughing and joking the whole way, and it was cute to watch.

When I picked them up two hours later, the three of them were discussing how sweaty they were, how hard they worked, and what size t-shirts they had received (based on their mom’s order).

One of the girls exclaimed that her shirt was probably bigger because she is bigger. It made sense to her and she was happy. For the record, as a Registered Dietitian, I have no reason to be worried about her size. She’s normal, and her shirt size ended up being the same as the others.

I loved this girl’s self-confidence and she wasn’t necessarily comparing herself to her friends. But, what impressed me most was the support she received. Lydia and the other girl gently changed the focus and encouraged their friend. They normalized the statement and it soon became a non-issue.

I’m not sure if they quite understood it from my perspective, but I reminded them that there is no perfect size and we all grow differently. I used some examples of my own friendships, and how each person can be a similar size but perhaps a different shape.

I will leave you with this simple quote by writer, Wes Angelozzi, “Go and love someone exactly as they are. And then watch how quickly they transform into the greatest, truest version of themselves. When one feels seen and appreciated in their own essence, one is instantly empowered.” I hope you are as encouraged as I am by these kids!

God, thanks for the gift of dear friends! Help us be quick to respond with grace and kindness. Help us put Your sacrificial love in action. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Question: Have you learned anything profound from interacting with children lately?

Task: Next time you are around a group of children, watch whether they make fun of each other or whether they encourage and accept one another. Remember, much of this behavior is learned, so be sure to set a good example!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a crazy busy week, but it all went well! Every night had one activity or another… all purposeful and good, but just a lot all in one week. I washed the dishes on Monday, but it was Thursday before we even got to put them away! All the running around was worth it in the end.

Monday evening was our mom/daughter Bible study on courage. Then, we took advantage of the beautiful weather while we had it! We went on our first bike ride of the season. Lydia was thrilled she could keep up with me on her new bike! I’m hoping to have many more rides together this summer.

On Tuesday night, we attended a special folk concert put on by the local symphony orchestra! Local fourth graders received free tickets from school as a way to introduce them, so a few of Lydia’s friends joined us with their moms. It was inspiring to hear these songs in person and see each instrument at play. I always forget how much I enjoy live classical music!

Wednesday night was church. I enjoyed a great discussion about Esther, who became the Queen of Persia. We discussed how she must’ve felt and what caused her to rise to the occasion. I even invited someone to join us, so it was cool to see her get involved!

On Thursday night, we went to the chiropractor and grocery shopping. Thankfully, I am doing so much better and we are spacing out our visits now. It is great to feel so much better consistently! I still have a few random issues, but they are minor and are on the mend!

Yesterday, was Good Friday, and we attended church in the evening. We sat with another family with three young sons. It was fun to talk with them and see them learning about Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice. It was a good reminder that Jesus is for each and every one of us, no matter how young or old!

Today, we maximized our time, too! We did our usual cleaning and housework, but we also made a lot of food. I made buckwheat pancakes with kefir, lemon zest, and blueberries! I made up the recipe as I went! I also made some stuffed pepper soup and baked tofu. Then, Lydia and I made some fresh lemonade. It kind of turned into a science experiment but was delicious! We also snuck in an Easter egg hunt and are dying Easter eggs now, while watching a movie!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was another great week!

The weather was chilly and windy, but ended on a good, sunny note! Lydia made me laugh when she questioned if we should stay home because of the wind! We did receive a little snow, but nothing major… and now, most of it’s gone again!

I had a really great chat with one of my closest friends a couple of nights ago. She lives in a different time zone, so great to catch up over the phone! I am always amazed by God’s timing. We were dealing with similar issues, and we were able to encourage each other!

Today, I was on-call for work, though I did not get called in. It’s always good to be prepared either way! We had also some family visit this weekend, and they took Lydia to do some fun art activities while I waited for my on-call time to end.

Later, we went out to eat, watched a movie, and went shopping for a new bike for Lydia! Now, she has a 26-inch bike with a small-medium frame. She’s so excited and will be able to keep growing into it for a while. I was surprised we bypassed the 24-inch size, which was clearly too small for her. Thankfully, this one should last her a few years of potential growth!

Otherwise, it was a normal, busy week! It was good to find God’s grace along the way, and I am grateful for all the little ways He showed up. Bible study discussion with friends, chocolate ice cream at work, and creating a bulletin board at work highlighting peoples’ pets (a fun team building activity). 🙂

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a good week! It was less crazy than last week, for sure. Work was busy, but things were more or less back to normal.

My toenail is still not 100%, but it is slowly getting better with the antibiotic. I made another doctor’s appointment for later next week, but maybe I won’t need to go!

I joined a ladies’ group at church, while Lydia participated in Wednesday activities. We started a book about women in the Bible, which should take us through the next few months. It was fun to see some old friends and meet some new ones!

Lydia had a remote learning day for school (at the Y) yesterday due to another blizzardy Friday! It wasn’t too bad in town, but there were several accidents in the rural areas. I went to work, grabbed some groceries, and picked her up early so we could enjoy a little extra time together. This included a fun 2+ hour game of Monopoly. Lydia really enjoyed being the banker… even though I won!

Yesterday, I had a really encouraging call with my mom. I called just to say hi since I missed her, but then I asked her for some advice. Through her wise words, she confirmed that I am doing exactly what God wants me to do right now. I am so grateful for her and my dad! They truly are the best parents.

Today was another relaxing day with Lydia. We played with hair, clothes, and makeup; I am so glad to have a girl! I talked with my sister and made some delicious brownies, too. Weekends are perfect for trying new things!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week was a bunch of wild cards! It was quite busy and full of the unexpected. Even when I was fully prepared for certain events, they still didn’t turn out just as I planned. Thankfully, God was with me and helped me get through it all.

This week, I covered outpatient services when my other coworkers were out of the office for various reasons. At times it was one patient after another and it stretched me professionally. It wasn’t all bad, just a little stressful.

I also picked up a couple of patients who had new feeding tubes. I had plenty of time to prepare before they came for their supplies and education. But what I didn’t expect is that they came on the same day at nearly the same time when no one else was available to help! At one point, I met the patient out in the transport vehicle that had picked him up… he was too weak and tired to come into the building. Thankfully, it worked out and all’s well that ends well!

Lydia had a remote learning day for school yesterday due to a blizzard. It threw off my work schedule a bit, but I was able to stay a little later and call it even. It turned out to be a blessing after all!

I went to the doctor yesterday for an ingrown toenail and just started a ten-day antibiotic (hopefully avoiding a podiatry consult!). Soaking my foot or the last week hasn’t done the trick, but it’s been a painful two-week ordeal so far.

Today was another bitterly cold day, so we didn’t mind staying home. I did clear some snow and did some usual Saturday dishes and laundry. Needless to say, with my toe, I am happy to keep my feet up!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This week started off a little shaky but ended well! Praise God! Early on, I was having technical difficulties with my internet. I had to manage my emotions and calm down. I was still able to post my blog for Wednesday, but I had to jump through a few extra hoops. Thankfully, on Friday, the internet company came and updated a few wires and such. It was very out of sync but now it is working very fast and very well!

This week, I was pleased to receive more compliments about my book. In one case, I called to make a routine appointment and the person on the other end was reading it! She said it was good to understand the challenges we faced, but she also appreciated how I regularly turned the story back to God. It is fun to hear from a variety of people and see how God is using my pain for His glory!

Today, Lydia and I relaxed at home. We made a breakfast casserole, and later, some cookies. We told jokes, read books, and made a music playlist with Oldies favorites with family input. We also played a game and watched a movie, which seems to be our winter-weather go to these days! 🙂 We really don’t mind!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a great week! I received satisfactory answers for some of the unknowns I faced last week. Not quite the answers I expected, but answers filled with God’s grace. I’m grateful He holds us close and watches over us!

The weather was cold, but we didn’t have any blizzards. So that made driving fairly easy, which always eases my mind. I was able to host some friends one night, so I was very glad the weather was decent!

This week, I was able to learn more about gut health through an online (nutrition) continuing education course and also a seminar today. What’s even cooler is that I was able to help a patient with that information! Another bonus is that my own gut health also stands to benefit!

I enjoyed a productive work week this week! My office is still a little chilly, but the space heater has been working well. I attended some good meetings and had great collaboration on some projects with my coworkers!

Today, I had the gut health seminar, and we caught up around the house. I worked on some home maintenance issues, such as fixing some wires in my ceiling fan. Also, a friend came over to hang out, which was great since we haven’t seen each other for awhile!

Where did I find God’s love and favor—His abundant grace—this week?!

This was a good week left with some unknowns! Nothing too important for now, just I didn’t get some answers when I hoped to get them. Maybe next week, lol!

We enjoyed snow and cold, but also warm sweaters and boots! The snow is falling like a snow globe right now! I haven’t been out to clear snow, but might do it later!

This week, I felt like I was running in several directions at times, but I also enjoyed quality time with Lydia. We had food delivered and made buckwheat pancakes. We watched movies and played some games, too!

Work went well, and it was a good mix of being busy and catching up. My office, and the one next to mine, were really chilly, so we wore our coats for a little while. It was funny, and we made jokes that heat must not be in the budget. A work order was put in eventually and a couple of space heaters helped make it more bearable.

This week, I hosted two Zoom calls about writing and publishing. It was fun to “give back” and encourage these friends who are at various points in the creative process. Everyone has a story to tell! We discussed how they can get started or keep going, and I shared some lessons learned and what worked best for me and my book.

Today, we stayed home relaxed. Lydia cleaned her room while listening to an audiobook. I changed a light switch, repotted two plants, and did some reading. I prepared for some upcoming events, too.
